Singular and plural naming words

Look at the images and match the following.

Any naming word which can show only one particular thing is called a singular naming word.

Eg., book, chair, pencil, car.

Any naming word which can show more than one particular thing is called a plural naming word.

E.g., girls, tables, chairs, spoons

We can write the plural of any naming words by adding ‘s’, ‘es’ to them.

Now let’s have a look at different ways of writing plural words -
1. By adding ‘s’
  • Shoe (singular) + s = Shoes (plural)
  • Chair (singular) + s = Chairs (plural)
2. By adding ‘es’
  • Beach (singular) + es = Beaches ( Plural)
  • Dress (singular) + es = Dresses (plural)
3. By changing ‘y’ to ‘ies’
  • Baby (singular) + ies = Babies (plural)
  • Party (singular) + ies = Parties (plural)
4. By changing ‘f’ / ‘fe’ to ‘ves’
  • Thief (singular) + ves = Thieves (plural)
  • Leaf (singular) + ves = Leaves (plural)
  • Life (singular) + ves = Lives (plural)
5. Some naming words need totally different word to form their plural word.
  • Child (singular) = Children (plural)
  • Tooth (singular) = Teeth (plural)
  • Foot (singular) = Feet (plural)
  • Ox (singular) = Oxen (plural)

    Naming words that show one number are called singular naming words. Plural naming words show numbers that are more than one. The plural forms can be made by adding ‘s’, ‘es’, ‘ies’ and ‘ves’ at the end.
