A microscope is an instrument used to see objects that are too small for the naked eye.

The science of investigating small objects using such an instrument is called microscopy. There are two types of Microscopes in general, They are:
(1) simple microscopes;
(2) Compound Microscopes.

(1) Simple Microscope : Simple microscope uses the principal that when an object is placed between first principal focus and the optical center of a convex lens, it forms an upright virtual and enlarged image on the same side of object. A simple microscope or magnifying glass consists of a convex lens of small focal length.
(2) Compound Microscope : A compound microscope essentially consists of two convex lenses. One of the lenses has a short focal length and is fitted at the end of a tube. It is called the objective. The other lens has a little larger focal length and is fixed at the end of another tube. It is called the eyepiece. The two tubes are arranged so that they have a common principal axis. The distance between the objective and the eyepiece can be varied to get a clear image.
