Calorimetry: A Calorimetry is an Experimental Technique for the Heat exchange measurement.

One of the important uses of calorimetry is the determination of specific heats of unknown materials. A calorimeter is a device used to measure the amount of heat exchange. The Principle used in Calorimeter is the amount of heat lost by the hot body must be equal to the amount of heat gained by the cold body.

A combustion calorimeter measures the heat that arises from burning. The sample is weighed into a digestion vessel and filled with oxygen. The burning process is started by means of an ignition spark. The experiment ends when the sample is fully burned. By measuring the temperature increase, the sample's calorific value or heating value can be calculated.

The substance whose specific heat has to be calculated is then placed quickly in the calorimeter containing known mass of water at known temperature. The contents are stirred constantly until the mixture attains the final common temperature. The heat lost by the substance will be gained by the water and the calorimeter. The temperature change in the water is then accurately measured with a thermometer.
